My first day in Taiwan winds down and it’s time to make my way over to the sleeping quarters for my stay. Emily had a full house so she kindly arranged for me and Ck to stay with her friend Cory. “You will love him, he is a drama teacher from Canada and lots of fun!” that was my briefing on my new housemate. And then we were in a taxi and directed to our destination. (Note: very very very few of the taxi drivers speak English, so the best way to get where you want to go is have it written down in CHINESE… I made the mistake of writing something in English and it didn’t work out so well, ultimately I had to call for translation-lesson learned.) Our taxi pulls up in front of a very nice building and a very nice gentleman opens our car door and greets us with a big hug- it was the infamous Cory and our new home… a la Poetree Resort! Upon receiving a tour we are introduced to Toto the talking toilet! Its kinda funny considering that half of Taiwan still uses squatters and here at the Poetree resort the toilet opens its lid and greets you hello, then gives you a wash, dry, a puff of perfume and sends you on your way! I had to overcome my shyness and become friends with Toto ASAP and become comfortable with this inanimate yet interactive object being a part of my bathroom experience. The entire house was equipped with talking devices and remote controls. The door bell featured a flat screen device which revealed a video of the person on the other end a pleasant jingle, it also served as the main control for all the lighting and curtains in the house, and allowed me to ring down the 24 hour concierge desk and ask for cheesecake/chocolate cake every night which I managed to balance out with the treadmill and the yoga room practice every morning. Needless to say the staff got to know me very well
So, let me tell you a little more about this resort/hotel/ condo community. It’s located in Tian Mu which is the foreigner hang out and the home of the American School. Cute little neighborhood which is walkable, although most people scoot around (oh btw I think Taipei has 10 million scooters! They are everywhere and all look the same, I often wondered how people found their scooter in the massive congregation of scooters… overall cute area and my new home for the next few weeks.
Day 1 in Taipei ended with a glass of wine and a long getting to know you session with Cory (I was forewarned that the bedtime wouldn’t happen until after midnight) and finally a restful sleep! Lights out… tomorrow is the big day … wedding number 3!!!
