Novice Cyclist Series: My new toy

I am nowhere close to being a bike geek (yet) but I am a geek nonetheless, especially when it comes to data. After a few of the more recent hill climbs left me huffing and puffing, I decided it was time to analyze my body, what’s my heart rate? What’s my cadence? What is the grade on this damm hill? Maybe this information will provide some justification to my poor performance and if anything at least a starting point. As I always say, can’t get where you want to go if you don’t know where you are starting. Introducing my new toy, the Garmin 500!!! It’s all set up and ready to go, can’t wait to test it on my last training ride tomorrow. My 3 pages will provide feedback on speed, cadence, heart rate, distance, temperature (no more freezing fingers) and more. Even better it all downloads to a nifty Garmin Training Center and maps out my performance… super cool! Makes me kinda wish I had invested in this device early in the training season, but it’s all a learning process with the novice cyclist.

ALC Training Update: The ALC training season is approaching its last training ride, tomorrow morning (one week before the event) we will celebrate our success with a 40 miler that includes a pleasant (NOT!) climb up Old La Honda road. It’s time to put the pedal to the metal and see how far I have come along. It’s hard to believe that 5 months ago I showed up to these meet ups wearing panties under bike shorts, sitting on a seat too high, handle bars too wide, lululemon yoga tanks that had no pockets and was a butt butter virgin. I had raised only $100 towards my $5,000 dollar goal. Regardless of how fast or slow I go, I have definitely come along way with the support of ALC, shoot I’m even speaking some of the lingo, oh look at that bike it has a compact crank with dur ace shifters and is light as a feather… well kinda speaking the lingo, still a baby geek. It’s been fun… looking forward to sharing my life on the event.
